Hi Everyone –

We hope everyone is doing well! For those of you who are residents of California, the IRS has extended returns to October 16, 2023. In addition, the Governor’s office has announced that it will conform to the IRS’s postponement of filing and payment deadlines to October 16, 2023 as well. This applies to all California residents except for taxpayers located in the following counties:

  • Imperial;
  • Kern;
  • Lassen;
  • Modoc;
  • Plumas;
  • Shasta; and
  • Sierra.

This applies to all returns due prior to the October 16, 2023, deadline. It also applies to any estimated taxes that are due prior to October 16, as well as the March 15 and June 15 passthrough entity elective tax payments.

This only applies to California residents.

For those of you who are residents outside of California the following deadlines apply:

March 15 – If you have any of the following entity types please send us an email requesting an extension. We are past the HS Tax internal deadline to submit your documents to file on time.

Partnerships – File a 2022 calendar year return (Form 1065). Provide each partner with a copy of their Schedule K-1. To request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 7004.

S corporations – File a 2022 calendar year income tax return (Form 1120S) and pay any tax due if applied at the state level. Provide each shareholder with a copy of their Schedule K-1. To request an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 7004.

Profit Sharing Contributions: Last date for S Corporations and partnerships to make profit sharing contributions and designate as applicable deductions for the 2022 tax year. If you file a form 7004 extending your entity return this is also an extension to make the retirement contributions.

S corporation election – File Form 2553 to elect to be treated as an S corporation beginning with calendar year 2023. If Form 2553 is filed late, contact us before filing.

April 18 – Please submit all documents by 3/17 if you want to file by 4/18.

Individuals – File a 2022 Form 1040 and pay any tax due. If you want an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 4868 and pay what you estimate you owe.

Individuals – If you’re not paying your income tax for the year through withholding (or won’t pay in enough tax that way), use Form 1040-ES and pay the first installment of your 2022 estimated tax.

Individuals – Last date for individuals to make traditional/SEP IRA and Health Savings Account contributions and designate as applicable deductions for the 2022 tax year.

Individuals – Gift tax returns are also due. If you gifted more than $16k during 2022 to anyone then you may have a gift tax filing requirement. This is automatically extended with your individual return. File form 8892 if you’ve already filed your individual return to request an extension of the gift tax return.

Trusts – File a 2022 Form 1041 and pay any tax due. If you want an automatic 5.5-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 7004 and pay what you estimate you owe.

Corporations – File a 2022 calendar year income tax return (Form 1120) and pay any tax due. If you want an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 7004 and deposit what you estimate you owe in taxes.

June 15

Individuals – If you’re not paying your income tax for the year through withholding (or won’t pay in enough tax that way). Use Form 1040-ES and pay the second installment of your 2023 estimated tax.

Individuals Abroad on April 18th – File a 2022 Form 1040 and pay any tax due. If you want an automatic 5-month extension of time to file the return, file Form 4868 and pay what you estimate you owe.
